Bat Pope Blesses Victory

It was another good week at Pub Quiz.  Some witty names, some funny guesses to odd questions, and hopefully you had a good time.  Nuh Nuh Nuh Nuh Nuh Nuh Nuh Nuh Nuh Nuh Nuh Nuh Nuh Nuh Nuh Nuh Bat Pope was one of three teams to score a perfect ten in round 1, and grabbed sole possession of first place in round 2.  They held on for the rest of the night for the win, but we unable to pull the jackpot chip.  In two weeks, it'll be 50/50 odds. Brittney Jean and the Time Travel Princesses were the randomly drawn team for round 2 topics. Those will be up next Friday.

Who? Gasms.

We had a good turnout this last week, and we're thankful for all of you that play.  We're also thankful that some of you brought your out of town friends or family to play.  It was a fun night, with four different round winners.  The first three round winners all put up 9 points in their round win!  By the end of night, We're Still Recovering from our Multiple Who-gasms was the winner.  However, the didn't pull the jackpot chip, so next week there will be 1 in 3 odds.

The randomly chosen team for topics for next week was Hold Me Closer, Tony Danza.  A little side note, this team was almost entirely made up of people visiting for the holiday.  Here's the topics they chose for you to stufy for next week's round 2:

Spoiler Altert: Still Dominant

Your Pub Quiz hosts love close games and rounds won by different teams.  We had a close game for the first couple of rounds this last week, and each round was won by a different team.  Spoiler Alert: Bill O'Reilly's Book Reveals that Obama Killed Jesus remained dominant in the end and won the night.  It was the first week of the jackpot, and Spoiler Alert didn't pull the lucky chip.

This week was also the first week where the winning team can't be chosen for topics, and It's Automatic, It's Systematic, It's Hydromatic, Why It's Greased Riker was the lucky team chosen for round 2 topics.  Here's what you should study:
Grease (the movie)
Narcolepsy
Ralphisms - saying of Ralph Wiggum from the Simpsons
Cole Porter lyrics
Die Antwoord
Knitting
Animal Fibers
David Lynch movies
Chicago (the city)
Fresno Pub Quiz Team Names
US Space Program History

Have a round where you get a 9 and another where you get a 9.5.  Unless you really monkey up the other two rounds, you're a shoe in for the win.  That's what Spoiler Alert: Being Named Incognito Doesn't Let You Hide did on the night.  When it came to the jackpot, it was 50/50 odds and they didn't pull the blue chip.  That's right, the jackpot rolled over to next week where it will be a guaranteed jackpot.

We hope you all had a fun night.  The game was close all night long, with The Ghost of Riker (the top team) spooking their way to a two point victory.  They didn't pull the jackpot chip, so next week the odds of winning are 50/50.

Busy Busy Busy at Pub Quiz

The round wins were spread around the room the other night at Pub Quiz.  My Government Pulls Out, But I Don't snatched the lead after round two, and held on for the rest of the night.  It was close going into round 4, with only 1/2 point separating  My Government and Riker is Forever, but My Government rolled on.  They kept on rolling as they drew their own random chip for next week's round 2. However, the roll stopped on the jackpot draw, so it rolled over and will begin to grow each week.

Thursday night we got together for the Tournament of Champions.  Here's how it went:
You guys did awesome!  We are very thankful that we had 21 teams show up and compete to see what were the trivia kings & queens of Fresno.  It was a close, tough game, as a championship should be.  When it was all said and done, Spoiler Alert: Gravity Was Not Actually Filmed in Space were our winners.  They hung around the top all night, but used a 9 point round 4 to leap frog over two teams in front of them.  Multiple Scoregasms finished in second, and Alana is Satan ended up third.  A special thanks go out to the Landmark, Sequoia Brewing Company and Cafe Corazon for prizes.

They stayed hot and pulled the jackpot chip, so next Wednesday, we'll have another week one.

Fresnocity Schools the Crowd

Spoiler Alert: The Sopranos is not an Opera Documentary jumped out to an early lead, winning rounds 1 & 2,  and each time it was on song length tie breakers. Fresnocity snatched the lead after round 3 and hung on for the win. It's a good thing they did, as they pulled the jackpot chip.

Spoiler Alert, Good Teams Are Good

Another good game at Pub Quiz this week. Fresnocity looked great out the gate with a 9 in round 1, and they won round 4, but the middle rounds hurt them.  Michael "The Jackhammer" Fox came on strong with a 9 in round 2, and hung close to the top, but ended up 4th overall.  Going into round 4, we had a tie between Spoiler Alert: The Black Keys Are Not Actually Black and Portmanteaugasm.  It was close round 4, and the top four teams were within 2.5 points, but Spoiler Alert pulled it off.  In an interesting twist, they also pulled their chip to pick topics for next week's round 2.  What they couldn't pull off was the jackpot, so that begins to build.  Congrats to spoiler alert for the win.

Seal Team 666 and All We Do is Lose both qualified for our upcoming Tournament of Champions.  In an interesting twist, we still have two open slots for that game.  So, next week we'll still be qualifying teams, and hopefully we'll lock down our final two teams for the October 17th Championship Game.

As mentioned earlier, Spoiler Alert: The Black Keys Are Not Actually Black drew the random chip to pick topics, and here's what they chose for next week's round 2:

Pai Gow Poker
Oakland Raiders
The Sapranos
Big Brother 15
Iron Maiden
Dewey Decimal System
Legion of Superheroes (comic book)
Janelle Monae
Vintage Analog Synthesizers
Black Sabbath 1st 6 albums 1969-1975
Lyrics by The Smiths
Chinatown (movie)
Mammalian orders
The League (tv show)

You had better study up because Spoiler Alert doesn't play when it comes to their topics. If you want to win, you better hit the books, or the internet.

Gasm 5 Times and Call Me in the Morning

We admit, sometimes it's a small night at Pub Quiz.  We understand, people have things going on, not everyone can play every week.  This week was one of our smaller games, but that doesn't mean it wasn't good.  The game had a few lead changes, a few tied rounds, and when we finished 40 questions, Commander Rikers Baadasss Song was tied at the top with Grand Theft Gasm 5.  You know what, last week these teams tied on the night, although it wasn't for first place. They settled it with arm wrestling. We're not sure who won.  But when we have a tie at the end of the night, we do a tie breaker question.  Grand Theft Gasm 5 won that, and flexed a little muscle by pulling the jackpot chip.  Yep, it was only week one, but who doesn't like winning?  That means next week will be another week with 5 chips in the bag.

We only had two teams qualify for our upcoming Tournament of Champions. They are:
The Michael J. Fox Show is Really Shaking Things Up at NBC
Team 5 is Alive!

Since we only qualified two teams, that means four teams can qualify next week.  That could be you!

The Michael J. Fox Show is Really Shaking Things Up at NBC was also randomly drawn to pick topics for next week's round 2, and here is what they chose:
Big Bang Theory (tv show)
Friends (tv show)
Rules of Lacrosse
Rules of Curling
Medical Terms
Fast Pitch Softball
Animated Disney Movies
California University of Pennsylvania
University of Oregon football
University of Southern California
San Diego Zoo
Black Keys (band)
California Penal Code
Ca. Court of Appeal, 5th Appellate District

We hope you enjoy your weekend. Get out and see a film at Reel Pride. Check out the FUSE Festival and its great local music downtown.  But study up, and we'll see you next Wednesday at Pub Quiz.  Bring a friend, test your knowledge, and maybe win some prizes.

Spoiler Alert: Winners Ahead

It was a runaway game for Spoiler Alert: Osama Dies at the End of Zero Dark Thirty.  The jumped out and won rounds 1 & 2, and had good scores in rounds 3 & 4. When it was all said and done, they were 6 points ahead of the pack.  They continued to dominate the night by pulling the jackpot chip.  That means next week the jackpot starts fresh, and there will be 5 chips back in the bag.

Three more teams qualified for our upcoming championship in October.  Joining last week's 3 were:
Alana is Satan
Fresnocity
The Little Mensels

Finally, in our random draw to select round 2 topics, Fresnocity was drawn.  We were shocked, as we hadn't imagined that the same team would be drawn in successive weeks through a random system.  But they were, and here are the topics chosen to study for round 2:
Alt J
Famous Armenians
Greys Anatomy (tv show)
Skins (UK tv show)
Tim Curry films
80's heavy metal bands
soundtrack for the movie Singles
Make Mine Music (movie)
Johnny Depp movies
Laguna Beach (tv show)
Sleeping Beauty (Disney movie)
Disneyland Rides & Attractions
Monkees Headquarters (album)
Charlotte's Web (book)

Remember, you can actually study these topics. Studying will help your team. Shocking, right?

Riker Won't Go Out, but they're In!

It was the first week of qualifying for our Tournament of Champions, and it was also another good, close game.  In case you're wondering, the games are still the same, we just inviting people to play in a Championship match in October.  There is a Riker that Never Goes Out was in first place after every round, and yet never won a round outright.  They did win the night, but didn't pull the jackpot chip.  Next week it'll be 1 blue and 2 red chips in the jackpot bag.

This week's qualifiers for the Championship Game:
There is a Riker that Never Goes Out
Spoiler Alert: Oscar Wilde is not a Homophone
Gasmsag

That means that those three teams are in.  If they finish in the top 3 next week,  the 4th place team will qualify (and so on).

Our random team selected to pick round 2 topics was My Mantra is E.S.A.D. (Eat Shit and Die) and here's what they selected for you to study:
Mary Poppins (movie)
N'Sync (band)
Songs of the Monkees
Babysitter Club books
Torchwood (tv show)
Zankou chicken
Panera Bread Secret menu
80's MTV VJ's
Real World Seattle
Passions Soap opera
Rides & Attractions at Disneyland
Grease 2 songs
Hazel (tv show)
Farmer Boy by Laura Ingels Wilder (book)

Study up so your team can not only win, but qualify for the Tournament of Champions!

Hermanos Not about Meth

Sometimes you play Pub Quiz and you have less than 6 people.  We don't advise it, but it happens. Sometimes when you have less than 6 people you ask us if anyone is looking to join a team. We saw a bit of that this week.  You know what, one team took on a random player, and they won a round for the first time.  Another two teams joined together, and they won it all.  Okay, this doesn't always work out like this, but it did this week so we'll hype it up.  In the game we had a bunch of round tie breakers, and we ended up with 4 different round winners.  Cinco Hermanos De La Noche +1 were the overall winner, but they didn't pull the jackpot. It was the first week of the jackpot, so they probably were alright not winning it.

In our random drawing for round two topics, My Shuttlecraft is Full of Rikers was drawn, and they chose these topics for you to study for next week's round 2:
Foreign Phrases Commonly Used in English
Homonyms
Homophones
Homosexuals in History
Palindromes
Spelling
Oddities (tv show)
The Many Roles of William Shatner
Menu @ Livingstones
Climate Change
Redlipped Batfish (the fish)
Ice Road Truckers (tv show)
Fresno bands
Oscar Wilde in totality

And now for information about our cross town Pub Quiz Championship.  Here's how it will work:
3 teams a night will qualify.
Your team can qualify at Fresno Pub Quiz at Landmark on Wednesdays, or Sequoia North Pub Quiz on Tuesdays.
If a qualified team finishes in the top 3, we'll add in the next placed team, so 3 teams will always qualify.
Overall, 24 teams will qualify.
Once your team has qualified, you're in for the Championship, which will take place Thursday, October 17 at the Landmark.

A Gasmic Win

We love it when every round has a different winner.  And we love it when games are close.  So we loved this week. Now, when it gets down to the last few weeks in a jackpot drawing, it the game gets a little tougher.  And you may not love that.  But this week's tough game produced some excitement as we ended up with an overall tie.  Obama Doesn't Need A Warrant to Read Your Sex-Gasms won the tie breaker.  They really showed their skills, or luck, by pulling the jackpot chip. Congrats to them on winning a tough game and the jackpot.

Our random topics draw was won by Steve Mensel Still Won't Play With Us, and here are the topics they chose for you to study for next week's round 2:
World War 2 guns
Punjabi Language
SSA terminal Oakland
89.3 KPCC
Kim Gordon
The Office (seasons 1-8, US version)
Algebra
Michelin Three Starred Restaurants
University High School Fresno
SF MOMA
Cigarette Brands
Calculus
Almonds
Salter's Distributing

Study up for next week's game.

In other news, the big news this week is the announcement of our crosstown tournament! That's right, we're teaming up with the folks who run Sequoia Pub Quiz to put on a tournament of champions. Here are the basic details with more information to follow:

September will be qualifying month. Each of the four weeks in that month, at both venues, the top three teams will be automatically entered into the final. If a team that has already qualified is in the top three, then we'll go down the rankings to get the top three qualifiers who haven't done so already.

That means there will be 12 qualifying teams from Fresno Pub Quiz and 12 qualifying teams from Sequoia Pub Quiz. You can qualify at either quiz but not both and the venue at which you qualify will be the one your team represents in the final.

The Championship game between those 24 teams will take place on October 17th (yup that's a Thursday), and after the Big Fresno Fair closes up shop for the year.

The quiz format will be the same for qualifiers and the final will also be the same format with questions and music contributed by both of the hosts. All other aspects of the September games will stay the same with jackpots rolling or being won like normal.

We'll let you know where the final will be as well as other details and potential prizes/giveaways as we get closer. For now, if you're interested in being a part of this, start getting your A-team together and keep your minds sharp

Spoiler Alert: Jackpot Rolls On

Usually, when we look back at a night of trivia, we judge it by a few things:
- did people have fun?
- did multiple teams win a round?
-did the jackpot roll over?

We like yeses to those questions. When we get them all in a week, we're pretty darn excited.  This week, three yeses.  And boom goes the dynamite.

Spoiler Alert: Walt Changed His Nom de Meth From Heisenberg to Schrodinger jumped out to an early lead by winning round one.  The pulled down round three, and managed to hang on for the win.  Two other teams won rounds, and kept the game fairly close through the night.  Sadly for Spoiler Alert, they didn't pull the jackpot chip, so next week it's 50/50 odds.

Thanks Obama was chosen to pick next week's round two topics, and here's what they came up for you:
California Fire Code
IPA Beer
Chinatown (Fresno)
Wigfield (book)
Capital Cities songs (band)
Craps (game)
Back to the Future trilogy
Ewan McGregor movies
Sexy Pub Quiz Hosts
X-Box 1
GAAP Accounting
The Houston Texans
Marin County
Ron Swanson quotes

Have fun studying up, although we don't advise you stalk your sexy pub quiz hosts.

If you'd like another night of trivia, we encourage you to check out the pub quiz at Sequoia North.  Also, be on the lookout for information about a Pub Quiz playoff.

A Week of Fours

This Wednesday saw the normal four rounds of trivia, and each with a different round winner.  After those four rounds, there was a four way tie for first place, which was settled with a tie breaker.  Alana is Satan won the tiebreaker, guessing the closest to the elevation of Half Dome.  There were four chips in the jackpot bag, but the winning chip was not chosen. So, the jackpot grows and the odds get better.

This Wednesday we also announced the return of topics to round two. However, we'll do a random drawing each week to determine the team that will pick the topics instead of using the round 4 winner. Robots from the Other Side of the Tracks were drawn this time, and these are the topics chosen for next week's round 2:
Buffy the Vampire Slayer (tv show)
Siouxsie and the Banshees (band)
Los Angeles Dodgers
Bob Dylan
The Tick (cartoon tv show)
California Building Code 2010
Pushing Daisies (tv show)
Human Anatomy
Greek Mythology
Renaissance Art
Title IV Funding (financial aid)
Young Frankenstein (movie)
Parks & Recreation (tv show)
Disneyland

We hope you enjoy studying these topics and we'll see you next week at Pub Quiz.

Spoiler Alert, Gasms Were Good Hosts

We always love having one of our teams take over hosting duties.  We get to play, and you all get to get angry at someone else's questions.  Just kidding on that second part.  But we appreciate when a team steps up and runs the night.

This week, the team that likes to Gasm took over for us.  They brought out a mix of questions, challenged us all, and hopefully everyone had a good time. We know we did, as we won a round for the first time ever!  The game belonged to Spoiler Alert: Alana Comes in Second Tonight, who won round 2 and the game.  Our guest hosted games are always one offs, so Spoiler Alert took home the jackpot.

Next week, we return to our normal game, with your normal hosts behind the head table.  We'll be on the second week of a building jackpot, with 3 red and 1 blue chips in the jackpot bag.

Quiz-gasms Were King

There were several royal related names among the pop culture references by teams this week.  Hopefully, the future possible king of England learns of us at some time.  But when he does, will he learn of We'll Be Giving You the Quiz-gasms Next Week?  Perhaps.  They were good enough to win round two, and good enough to string together a top score and were crowned champions.  Alas, they were not lucky enough to go King Arthur style and pull the winning chip from either a stone or the bag.  The jackpot will carry over to two weeks from now.

Like their name implies, the Gasms will be guest hosting next week.  For those that don't know, periodically your regular hosts take a week of and play from the other side of the table.  Another team volunteers to create all the questions and run the show for the night.  So next week, the team that has Gasms in their name will be hosting.  Like always with guest hosts, it will be a winner take all match - the top team of the night automatically wins the jackpot!  So, it's always a good chance to show up, flex your brain muscles, and take home a good prize.

One final note - through July we haven't had our Round 2 topics.  Now is your chance to let us know your opinion.  Should we go back to Round 2 topics chosen by a team?  Should we continue to create 4 rounds of trivia like we did in July?

Friday, July 19, 2013

The Spoils Go to the Victors

After three rounds last week, three teams were tied for first. However, one team wanted it all, and so they answered 8 of the final 10 questions correctly and took home the win. Congratulations go out to Spoiler Alert: Space Mountain Isn't Really in Space. Not only did they win the game, they also won the jackpot.  Next week, the jackpot starts fresh.

One final note: the Landmark is a restaurant/bar. They do not allow outside food or drinks. Please do not bring unapproved outside food or beverages into The Landmark. They can lose their liquor license if the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control catches patrons with outside items so it's a matter of regulation. If you're hoping to celebrate a birthday or other event during pub quiz with baked goods, call ahead to check with the manager and see if what you'd like to do is kosher with them. Their bar and restaurant, their rules.

See You Soon

It's true, Pub Quiz will be back this week.  We hope you enjoyed your vacation.  But, we also hope your brain didn't atrophy in your time away from the game.  This week jackpot odds are 1 in 3, so you've got a good chance of taking home the jackpot if you can win the game.

This week, we will have a game theme of California Theme Parks.  Remember all your good times on family vacation?  Remember making out in line for that ride?  Remember smelling terrible after that water ride?  Collect your memories and we'll see you Wednesday night at Pub Quiz.

No Longer Underperforming

First and foremost, we'd like to thank Fresno Filmworks for donating tickets to an upcoming showing.  The tickets went to the best name on the night, We Twerk Hard for the Money.

The Spectacularly Underperforming Multiple Drunkgasms won round one, and although they weren't in first every round, they stayed close enough and pulled off the win.  But, for the second week in a row, they didn't pull the jackpot. It continues to build!

Remember, the Landmark is closed next week, so Pub Quiz will be on vacation.

Gasming Over the Rainbow

This week was one of those weeks at Pub Quiz. Commander Riker is Fraked Tonight won rounds 1 and 4.  Spoiler Alert: The 1980's A's Didn't Win the Pennant won rounds 2 and 3.  And the night, it was won by Taste the Rainbow-Gasms.  Slow and steady wins the race sometimes?  However, they didn't win the jackpot.

Remember, for the month of July, there will be no topics in round 2.  However, next week is the 4th of July, so you can expect some Americana related questions.

Also, remember that there will be no Pub Quiz on July 10 because the Landmark will be closed for their annual vacation.

Friday, June 21, 2013

Jon Snow Is NOT Arya's Father

Spoiler Alert: Jon Snow is Arya's Father jumped out to a lead this week that they never let go.  They didn't win the Game of Thrones themed round 2, or rounds 3 or 4, but they did well enough to hang on for a victory.  Their reward: they pulled the jackpot.  Congratulations go out to them. Perhaps they can use their winnings for a Maury Povich paternity test.

Round 4 was taken down by Alana is Satan, who finished second overall for like the billionth time.  Here are the topics they chose for next week's round 2:
Factotum (novel)
1980 Oakland A's
Downtown Fresno
The Who lyrics
GNU/Linux
Probability & Statistics
Thermodynamics
Alcohol
Venture Brothers
Arrested Development (tv show)
Futurama (tv)
Monty Python
Saturday Night Live
California Geography

A couple of housekeeping notes:
- In July, we're going to try the game without the topics round.  Still 4 rounds of trivia, just no study beforehand to see how you like it.
- No Pub Quiz on July 10th - the Landmark will be closed that week for it's annual vacation.

No on G, Yes on G Strings

This week was one of those games where a team just dominates. No on G, Yes on G Strings didn't win all four rounds, but the did take down three of them.  The rest of the teams played a good, close game, but no one could get near No on G, Yes on G Strings.  The only thing they didn't do was pull the jackpot, so it continues to grow.

Here's the topics No on G, Yes on G Strings elected for you to study up for next week's round 2:
Ashara Dayne
Meera Reed
Asha Greyjoy
Arya Stark
Arthur Dayne
Jon Snow
Oberyn Martell
Ghost (direwolf)

Ideal Gasm Law was not Inert

Ideal Gasm Law grabbed ten points to win round one and never looked back this week.  After it was all said and done, they won the night by three and a half points.  It was the first week of a fresh jackpot and they graciously allowed the jackpot to start building and pulled a non-jackpot chip.  Or, they just pulled the wrong chip.  Congratulations to Ideal Gasm Law for the win.

Micheal Douglass Is a Cunning Linguist won round 4 and chose these topics for next week's game:
Pai Gow Poker
Dewey Decimal System
Lyrics by the Smiths
Feynman diagrams
Wilfred (U.S. tv show)

Stiching Together a Win

It was a jackpot week, and it seemed like teams were stretching their collective brains in their attempt to take home the big prize.  When it was all said and done, Witches Get Stitches pulled away from the pack and won it all.

Round four brought a three way tie, and all three teams were within ten seconds of the song length.  Norfolk-in-Chance was closest, and snagged the honor of choosing next week's round two topics.  Here's what they chose for you all to study up on:

Birth Defects (human)
Ideal Gas Law
Banned Books
Real Analysis
NP Complete Problems
Palindromes
Curling (sport)
Hurling (sport)
Furling (sailing)
Pearling (knitcraft)

Friday, May 24, 2013

Quoth the Gasm, it's a Winner!

It was a come for behind win for Quoth the Gasm, Nevermore as they jumped from third to first in the final round.  Pretty impressive stuff.  However, they failed to pull the jackpot at 50/50, so next week... someone has to win the jackpot, right?  Yes, yes, some team will win it all.  You had better bring your best team.

Even with Quoth the Gasm doing so well in round 4, one team did better. The Immortal Lobsters... Are Delicious with Butter swallowed up nine points and round 4.  We think it may be the first time for this team to win round 4, and these are the topics they choose for next week's round 2:
Del Taco History
Books by Neil Gaiman
Doctor Who
Bioshock Infinite
2013 NFL Draft
Honey Badgers
STD's

Satan Wins Again

Pub Quiz can be a cruel mistress.  You can win two rounds, feel on top of the world, and almost have it snatched away from you. You can win two rounds, but still not end up in the top two at the end of the night.  You can not win any rounds, but play solid and end up losing in a tie breaker at the end.  All of those things happened this week at Pub Quiz.  When it was all said and done, Alana is Satan prevailed.  They've been on quite a streak lately, with several first place finishes.  However, they didn't pull the winning chip, so next week it's 50/50 odds.

Will you be on the team to win the jackpot?  To have a good shot, you had better study on these topics, provided by Multiple Sarcasms, our round four winner:
The Office (US version)
The Mindy Project (tv show)
The Land Before Time (movie)
The Beatles
The Definite Article (The)
The Cat Who Walks Through Walls (book)
The United States Constitution
The Guardians of the Galaxy (comic book/movie)
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (book)
The Dark Side of the Moon (Pink Floyd album)
The Dark Side of the Moon (The Dark Side of the Moon)
The Meaning of Life (Monty Python movie)
The Hague
The The (band)

There you go, folks.  Study up, and we'll see you next Wednesday

V for Victory?

Riker, Almost a Palindrome, Almost had what some may call a bookend game.  They won round 1, hung on to first place through rounds 2 and 3, and then won round 4.  Pretty impressive stuff, worthy of our congratulations.  But, do you know what they didn't win? The jackpot.  Sadface for that.  But that means next week there will be 3 chips in the bag - 2 red & 1 blue.  Will your team cast aside Riker like a bad number one?  Will your team be a jackpot winner?  Or will Riker return engage for another victory?

Riker hopes you don't study these topics, but we think you should:
Volcanoes
Vulcans
Vulcanizing
Vocalists on Broadway
Vidal Sassoon
Vegetables
Villains from Disney
Vidal, Gore
Visalia
Venezuela
Venture Brothers Cartoon
Versailles (in France)
Voluptuous Vixens

One final note, you can hear an interview with your Pub Quiz hosts on Sunday morning at 9:30 a.m. on KFSR, 90.7.   We'll be on The Art of the No.

And it Collins For the Win! Yes!

Collins B. Ballin' dunked all over the competition this week.  They won two rounds, and were a part of a round 4 tie that helped them jump over everyone else for the win.  It was the first week for the jackpot, and unfortunately for Collins B. Ballin', their luck didn't hold through the jackpot draw, so next week there will be four chips in the draw.

Round 4 was won on a tie breaker was by a team called whose name we've chosen not to publish.  On a serious note, we don't mind outrageous names, but we also don't want to drive people away.  Please keep that in mind when you're coming up with your creative names.  Here are the topics chosen for next week's round 2:
The RH Factor (band)
Brushy One String
Anaheim Ducks
Bob's Burger's (tv show)

Satan Was Your Host

Guest hosts are great for us - we get to rest our question writing brains and play from the other side of the table.  So, this week we'd like to thank Alana is Satan for serving as guest hosts and letting us enjoy the game as participants.  As we always do with guest hosts, it was a stand alone, winner take all game, and Los Pervertibles de la Noche won it.

Two weeks ago, round 4 was won by How to Properly Scream and they chose these topics for next week's round 2:

Starcraft 2 - Wings of Liberty and Heart of the Swarm
Star Trek Voyager
Bravest Warriors (cartoon)
Justified (tv show)
Beer Home Brewing
Lexx (tv show)
Derek (UK tv show)

The Devil is in the Details

There was only one chip and that meant a big jackpot was going to be doled out.  That also meant the winners were really going to have to earn their victory.  The game stayed close, there were lead changes each round and at the end of it all the top five teams were all within two and a half points.  Alana is Satan worked their devilish minds and conjured up the victory and took home the jackpot, so congratulations go out to them.

Round 4 was won by How to Properly Scream, and they came up with some good topics to study.  However, next week (4/17) we'll have a guest host, so How to Properly Scream's topics will be used in round 2 on 4/24.  Check back next week for their topics.

Next week we continue our tradition of sharing our job every few months with one of our player teams.  Alana is Satan, who had a heck of a night this week, will be running the show.  Show up and see if you can outwit them.

Kings Crowned

It seems we specialize in close games, and this week didn't disappoint.  Once again, only a few points separated the top teams, and The Seattle Kings reigned victorious.  There were only two chips left in the jackpot, and unfortunately for them, they pulled the losing chip.  But that's great news for you all of you - next week is a guaranteed jackpot win.  Will the Seattle Kings be crowned champions and jackpot winner, or will another team usurp their throne?

The Irish Wrist Watchers clocked a 9 point round 4, and these are the topics they choose for next week's round 2:
Tap Dance Terminology
80's Action movies
New Testament
The Walking Dead (tv show)
Led Zepplin
It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia

Winner, Winner, Chicken Dinner

The top three teams this week all finished within three points of each other this week, with Expecto Patronizing Remarks one point ahead of Los Pervertibles De La Noche.  However, Expecto didn't pull the jackpot chip, and so next week there will only be two chips in the bag.

Fresnocity came on strong in round 4, winning that round and picked these topics for next week's round 2:
Mary Poppins (movie)
The Justice League (comic books)
The films of John Hughes
Les Miserables (the musical)
Beatles song lyrics
Doonesbury characters
California Politics
Physics
Sara Benincasa
Rides and Attractions at Disneyland
Jesus Christ Superstar lyrics
Miss Mona's No-No Rules

Evil Dwelt, won

It was a dominant win for I Made Evil, Dwelt: Lewd, Live Ed Am I this week.  They were a song tie-breaker away from winning all four rounds.  They ended up with 35 points after winning rounds 1, 2, and 4 with Los Pervertibles de la Noche taking down round 3.  As dominant as I Made Evil, Dwelt: Lewd, Live Ed Am I were on the night, they still didn't pull the jackpot, so next week there is a 1 in 3 chance.

Here are the topics picked by I Made Evil, Dwelt: Lewd, Live Ed Am I for next week's round 2:
Ginny Weasley
Sirins Black
Neville Longbottom
Moaning Myrtle
Severus Snape

Commander Rikurry and Rice Tastes Success

Another week, another good time at Pub Quiz.  When it was all said and done, the top 3 teams were all within 2 points of each of, and the next 4 were only another 1 or 2 points off of that.  And even though it was so close, one team actually managed to win rounds 1, 3, and 4.  That team, Commander Rikurry & Rice.  They ate up the competition but were not able to pull the jackpot chip from the full bag.  So, next week the jackpot starts to build.

Since they won round 4, as is custom, they chose topics for next week's round 2.  Here's what you should study:
Plate Tectonics
Diseases You Can Die From
South Lake Tahoe Nightclubs
Mormonism
Las Vegas, Nv.
Futurama
They Might Be Giants
Friar's Club
Palindromes
Giant Garter Snakes

Duckie For the Win!

It was another good week of Pub Quiz at the Landmark on Wednesday.  A couple of lead changes, a late rally and an overall tie made it fun for us, and hopefully for you as well.  When it was all said and done, Duckie Would Like to Thank the Academy were the winners, and they pulled the jackpot chip.

Attack of the Quads won round 4, and that helped them into the overall tie but they just missed on the tie-breaker.  However, they still chose these topics for next week's round 2 for everyone to study:
Words that start with the letter A
90's cartoons
80's cartoons
Dumb and Dumber (movie)
G-code (manufacturing)

Idiots be winning

A Tale Told By An Idiot had a pretty dominating night this week.  They won two rounds, and were in the tie breaker for the other two rounds.  They scored 34 points and won by 4.  The only thing that would have made it better for them would be if they had pulled the jackpot chip, but they didn't.  So, the jackpot will begin to grow.

Los Pervertibles del Noche won round 4, and chose these topics for next week's round 2:
Sookie Stackhouse novels
Harry Potter novels
Grade 3 California Content Standards version 1997 Mathematics

They Beamed Up A Win

It must have been fate or perhaps luck, because we asked a question about the highest percentage of people killed by shirt color on Star Trek in round 1, and although the Red Shirt Security Detail didn't win round 1, they won rounds 2-4.  They capped off their night by pulling the jackpot chip.  Pretty impressive stuff, we'd say.  Here are the topics they chose for next week:
Downton Abbey
House of Cards (netflix series)
Pagan Holidays
Symphonies of Beethoven
Secondary Characters in Harry Potter
Dewey Decimal Classification
Romanov Dynasty
A Midsummer Night's Dream (play)

Pour It!

Pour Me Some Sizzurp rocked the crowd and won a very tough game this week.  And, if we're not mistaken (sometimes we are) this was their first win, so congrats.  However, they didn't win the jackpot, so next week it's down to two red chips.

Round four was won by The Pope Has Proved His Credentials as a Good Catholic...By Pulling Out Before Finishing the Job and these are the topics chosen for next week's round 2:
I'll Have Another (race horse)

Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more.

Team Mitch Cumstein did a good job as guest hosts, but your regular crew returns to the head table next week.  It was a close game, but Fresnocity hammered home a 9 in round 4 and won by 2.5 points.  Since we had a guest host, it was a stand alone game so Fresnocity took home the night's jackpot.

Two weeks ago, Fresnocity won round 4 as well.  They joked as they turned in their answers that they would start writing topics in case they won the round.  We don't think they immediately went to work, but we did chuckle as the actually pulled off the round win (few do after such statements).  Here are the topics they chose for you to study for next week's round 2:
Jesus Christ Superstar lyrics
Construction Terminology
Meatballs (film)
SSRI drugs
Mary Poppins (film)
Badfinger (band)
Beatles lyrics
Aquaman
Star Trek movies (original cast only)
Partridge Family (tv show)
Sunset Blvd. (film)
Concrete
Black Sabbath
Disneyland Weddings

Enjoy your study and we'll see you from the host table on the 16th.  By the way, on the 16th we'll be celebrating our Pub Quiz anniversary.  We're turning 3!

Friday, January 4, 2013

Courtesy notice

We've had a couple instances in the last few weeks of players/teams leaving messes above and beyond the normal messes made at tables where people are playing pub quiz.

We understand that on busy nights, service can slow down. A room of over 100 people ordering drinks and food is a lot to handle. Please be respectful of The Landmark and its employees who are kind enough to house our pub quiz.

Your empathy is much appreciated.

Fiscal Cliff Klaven not averted

For the first three rounds this week, it was a darn close game.  In round four Fiscal Cliff Klaven pulled away for the victory and then pulled the jackpot chip.  Congrats to them for a good game and a big win.

Fresnocity won round 4 with a near perfect score.  However, we won't be using their topics until January 16, posted on Jan. 11, so check back for that.  The game on January 9 will have a guest host, so no round two topics.  Like other times with a guest host, the game will run pretty much the same as normal, but we'll be out in the audience, competing against the rest of you.  The team that frequently uses name variations of Mitch Cumstein will be creating and asking the questions.  Guest hosted matches are stand alone games, which means that it's winner take all (no jackpot draw).

If Mitch Cumstein passes along any hints, study recommendations, etc, we'll pass them along to you all.
