Next week, all there is in the bag is a blue chip. Bring your A-game, set your star line-ups, and study hard because you'll be contending with these topics from All My Fascist Friends Are Coming Over Tonight (don't eat saltine crackers while studying, these are dry enough):

Results from 8/31

We're Getting Dethroned Tonight was not, in fact, dethroned. Congrats on their win, but they just can't seem to pull the jackpot chip. Grey Matters won round 4, and their topics will be posted on Friday or Saturday. Thanks again to everyone for coming out and supporting Fresno Pub Quiz.

A friendly reminder: If you have a disagreement on an answer, please come up after a round and speak to Ed. Carrie and Adam are generally busy grading & scoring responses, and so Ed will hear your issue out. The three of us will discuss it as a team and come to a decision on the issue. We don't mind if you have a disagreement, but we want to make sure everything is handled in an appropriate fashion.

Here's the deal

All right, here's the deal. Finding Strangers In The Alps will be
hosting and they want you to know that music won't be in play this
week. Instead, they'll play audio clips of film dialogue and you'll
have to name the actor(s)* involved, the film, and your guess at the
length of the film.

*Not sure if it's actor or character but we'll get you some
clarification at some point.

So, if you heard this bit of dialogue:

"Describe what Marsellus Wallace looks like!"
"What?"
"Say 'what' again. Say 'what' again, I dare you, I double dare you
motherfucker, say what one more Goddamn time!"

Your answer would be Jules and Brett (or Samuel L. Jackson and Frank
Whaley depending on the clarification we get), Pulp Fiction, and if
you're really good 154 minutes.

Alana Is Satan dominates but the jackpot rolls

Alana is Satan won two rounds including a round four win on their road to victory. They drew a red chip though so you'll want to make sure you stake out a table next week before the Landmark closes for their regular summer vacation in two weeks. 4. Ecology
5. Micro-Brewed Beers

Music Twist!

Okay folks, Adam is throwing a twist into next week's music. He's going to try to come up with some leitmotifs (probably from film and television, maybe from video games) for your music. You'll have to guess the film, the character (or group of characters) represented by the motif, and the length of course. Just a heads up!

Don't know what I'm talking about, need an example? The music that plays whenever Jaws appears or is about to appear on screen, that's the shark's leitmotif. Your answer would be Jaws, Jaws, and a length.

Once You've Had a Fortensky, Everything Else is Gravy wins the night

With a dominating score of 34 points, team Fortensky swept round 4 and the overall win this last Wednesday but failed to draw the blue chip. Turnout was low, probably due in part to the rain and weather, but we hope the one in three chance of winning the jackpot pulls a few more of you out next week. Superfriends...With Benefits enjoy some perks

We had our first ever three-way tie after the final round of this week's game. Superfriends...With Benefits, Fresnocity, and Starring Commander Riker as "The Beaver" all finished with 30 points. It was a close game with a good showing from many teams but these three rose to the top. As the tie-breaker we asked the teams what the combined score of Super Bowl 45 was and Superfriends...With Benefits managed to get the right answer giving them the win. Alas (for them), they did not draw the jackpot.

In news that matters to all you studious types, The Snicklefits won round four and submitted these topics for your pain and suffering:

Multiple Scoregasms achieve the three-peat

It wasn't looking like they'd manage at some points of the night but Multiple Scoregasms did it and achieved three wins in a row. That enters them into the pantheon of previously dominant and sometimes "hated" teams including The Work Of Bavmorta, The Mad Figs, and team-who-changes-their-name-every-week. It's tough being on the top and the reign inevitably has to come to an end, but we'll see how long Multiple Scoregasms can keep the streak alive. I Am An FBI Agent! pulled a round four win that we think surprised even them. Will their potential round 2 advantage be enough to unseat the current champions or will some other teams mount an offense? This week we're down to the blue chip only. That means that the winner takes it all! Use your time wisely to study up:

1. Weezer
2. Rent (Musical)
3. Big Break (Golf Channel)
4. Oi! Bands
5. Breaking Dawn (Novel)
6. The Office (TV Show/U.S. version)
7. Entourage (TV Show)
8. Banking Regulations
9. San Jose Sharks
10. Interpol (Band)
11. KMJ Radio Shows
12. California Surf Spots
13. Cooking Terms (Not Baking)
14. Banking Terms

Those are some tough ones. Good luck and we'll see you next week!

Multiple Scoregasms gets the repeat win, they're hungry for more

We sorely missed Carrie at the head table for our one year anniversary pub quiz and the night was not without it's issues but we made it! One whole year of pub quiz. Here's to many more. Thank you for your support and your desire to play. We couldn't do it without your enthusiasm for trivia.

And in true dramatic fashion, it came down to an overall tie breaker in which we asked the two tied teams to guess what our highest weekly turnout was for the year. Multiple Scoregasms guessed 134 and Say My Name, Mitch guessed 183. The answer was 144 and so the answer was clear. But Say My Name, Mitch pulled out their first round 4 victory securing them the opportunity to amuse and confuse you with their topics. Enjoy and we'll see you next week!

1. Typography
2. Criminal Minds (TV Show)
3. Abstract Expressionists
4. Charles Bukowski
5. World Series of Poker
6. Golf U.S. Open Winners
7. Cary Grant Films
8. Weight Watchers

10. Kentucky Bourbon

Um...have fun "studying" number 12?

Friday, January 7, 2011

It was a Scoregasmic week

We started the new year off with a bang. 134 of you showed up to play on 25 teams. At the end of round 3 three it looked as if Grey Matters had a lock on their first win, but Multiple Scoregasms won round four and secured an overall win at the buzzer (as it were). They didn't draw the blue chip but you'll have to study their topics for next week's round 2 if you want the edge.

1. Exeter, CA
2. Doctor Who (TV Show)
3. Constitutional Law
4. Perez Hilton
5. U.S. Revolutionary War
6. John Dickson Carr/Carter Dickson
7. Peter Gabriel (Solo and Genesis work)

9. Agatha Christie
10. Buffy the Vampire Slayer
11. Dexter (TV Show)
12. Brian Clough
13. Jimi Hendrix
14. Adam Carolla

Study hard.

In other news, next week marks Fresno Pub Quiz's one year anniversary (give or take a day). We'll be talking to the Landmark to see if we can work out anything special in terms of food and/or drink and it looks as though we'll be trying to put together a special round 3 which will include five (you read that right, five!) bonus points. The way it will work is we'll be asking questions about historical dates (tie-in to our historical date *wink, wink*). If you can remember the year, you'll get a point. If you can remember the month and day, you'll get a half point bonus. An example:

Q: Remember when the airline attacks on the World Trade Center took place?
A: September 11, 2001

If you put 2001, that's one point. If you get it all correct, you'll get 1.5 total points for that question. Don't let the example lull you into a false sense of security. This will be round three and they won't all be so easy to remember.

We'll see you next week!

LIttle hint 2?

2nd hint for tonight (and it's not much of a hint): the song questions are super short, so you better have your listening ears fine tuned.

Tuesday, January 4, 2011

A little hint?

Here is what may be a hint (who knows how helpful it is) for this week's Pub Quiz.

Samples aren't always samples.
